The music wafted in the background.  Amanda stole a look at Lee.  He stood in fascination, his eyes glowing with excitement, enjoying his first experience as chaperone of a high school dance.  He'd protested heartily when Amanda had first suggested that he join her at the "Spring Fling," but with the whole family urging him on, he'd relented.  Now, he stood in the noisy and crowded gym, his trained eye scanning the students as if they were KGB agents.

Soon, he spied a young couple sequestered in a dark corner, kissing.  With the most official bearing he could manage, without giving way to the amusement he felt at memories of his own high school experiences, he walked over to them.

"Ha-hem," he cleared his throat to get their attention.

They didn't respond.

A little louder, "Ha-hem."

The duo jumped apart, the boy bumping his head against the hard tile wall with a resounding thump in the process.  As the young man reached up to rub the injured area, Lee began to speak.  Before he could utter a word, Amanda appeared at his side, touched his arm, and quietly said to the teenagers, "Why don't you two go and get some punch?"

Lee looked at her in disbelief.  "Amanda, I was gonna handle it."

"I know, I just thought..."  She looked ardently into his eyes.  The jade colored pools shone down upon her with such love and trust, that she felt breathless under their scrutiny.  She had the urge to reach up and kiss him.  Realizing that this would create a situation similar to the one they had just diffused, she began to laugh.

"And what's so funny?" Lee demanded.

"Oh, nothing," she smiled.  "Dance with me?"

"We can do that?" he asked incredulously as he walked her onto the dance floor.

"Oh, definitely, Scarecrow."

He took her into his arms, and they moved in harmony to the beat of the music.  Amanda looked up at him.  She stared into his eyes, enraptured, lost in the moment.

*~*~*Golly gee...When you turn them heaters on
Woe is me...got to put my cheaters on

Jeepers, creepers....where'd ya get them peepers
Oh, those weepers....how they hypnotize*~*~*

Lee gazed down at her, a soft smile dancing across his lips.  "Amanda?"

"Mmm hmmm," she answered as she leaned her head against his chest.

"Amanda, I want to kiss you," he breathed into her ear.

"I know, and I want you to," she replied giving her head an almost imperceptible shake, "but we can't, not here."

He pulled her closer, and began dancing toward the exit.

Amanda, hypnotized by his intimate proximity, and his fluent and practiced movements, didn't take any notice.  She reveled in the feel of his arms around her, the warmth of his body, the way they swayed to the music, their bodies joined together as one.

"Amanda," he called in a hushed murmur as he opened the door and slid over the threshold, never missing a beat.

As the soft cool air of the spring evening hit her skin, Amanda came out of her velvet daze.  Looking up, she asked, "Lee?  What are we doing out here?"

"I told you," he whispered softly, "I want to kiss you.  Since it's against the rules to do it in there," he nodded toward the building they'd just left, "I brought you out here."

A radiant smile crossed her face as he leaned in close and captured her lips.

Without warning, the sound of youthful voices broke out around them.  Lee and Amanda, startled, jerked their heads apart.  Looking up, they found themselves surrounded by a bunch of young revelers from the dance singing to them.  Among those in the group was the young couple whose kiss they had interrupted inside the gym.

*~*~*Jeepers, creepers....where'd ya get them peepers
Oh, those weepers....how they hypnotize
Where did ya get those
Golly where'd ya get those
Where did ya get them there eyes
*~*~*

Lee looked at Amanda, chagrin spreading across his face.

She, blushing in return, started to pull away, but he held her tight.  As the cluster of bodies continued their serenade, a lone individual stepped out from the formation.  A young man stood before them, his face, illuminated by the moonlight, obviously red.  He looked from one to the other, "Moooom," Jamie wailed, "how could you?"
