What Could Have Happened After: "Sour Grapes"

Synopsis: Amanda and Lee's thoughts about what Almost happened.
"Amanda," Dotty said in surprise and worry. "I
could use some help inside."
"I'll be right in mother." Amanda replied trying to sound encouraging.
Dotty hesitantly went back inside leaving Lee and Amanda alone.
"Sorry about that," came Lee's muffled voice from behind the mask
covering his face. "I didn't mean to get you in trouble."
Amanda smiled briefly at him, then motioning towards the door, she said softly,
"I'd better go in and try to explain what was going on."
Lee nodded, the mask bouncing slightly. "I should return this mask to it's
owner, . . . I'll see you tomorrow at work, right?"
"Right." Amanda managed another small smile, then walked into the
house closing the door loudly behind her.
Lee looked at the door wishing he could go inside to explain to Dotty who he
was, what he was doing there, and why she had found Amanda and him in their
‘situation.' He then realized it probably wouldn't do any good, and would
instead cause more questions that Amanda probably wouldn't want to answer, so he
walked away. He then returned the mask to the weird guy bobbing for apples, and
drove home.

"Mother please let me explain . ." Amanda said softly as she helped
her mother into her dress.
"Amanda, I've told you again and again, what you do is your own business.
I'm not going to interfere."
"But mother, I-"
"No," Dotty held up a hand to silence her daughter. "I don't want
to hear it. Lets just go and enjoy the party."
Amanda sighed as her mother marched out of the room. In a way she was relieved
that she didn't have to explain, especially since no explanation would have been
good enough.
‘He was about to kiss me.' The thought almost made her giddy. ‘The
amazing Lee Stetson was about to kiss me! What it would have felt like to feel
his lips on mine . .'
"Amanda! Are you coming?" Dotty yelled from the kitchen, interrupting
her thoughts.
"Yes mother!" She yelled back, then after smiling to herself, she ran
down the stairs to her impatient mother.

‘I was inches away from kissing her.' Lee thought as he sank down onto
the couch in his apartment. ‘If Dotty hadn't shown up I would have taken
her into my arms and-‘
The shrill of his phone interrupted his thoughts and he hurriedly picked it up,
secretly hoping it was Amanda.
"Hello? . . . Oh, hi Candice, uh . . . no actually now isn't a good time. .
. I know I said I'd call, but I-I've been busy. . . No, with work . . . Listen,
I really don't think I need to explain everything to you. . You want it to be
over? Fine. It's over. . . . Yeah same to you Candice."
He hung up the phone and sat back, resting his head on the back of the couch.
His thoughts went back to Amanda.
‘Ahh . . . the only reason I was going to kiss her was because I promised
Penny. We're just friends who work together. I think of her as any other person,
. . . . . right?'
He realized he was very unsure about his feelings towards Amanda, and he really
didn't want to explore them any more because he was afraid of what he might
find, so he chose to ignore them, and went to take a cold shower instead, with
hopes that it would take his mind off of other things that he didn't want to
think about . . . . . . .
