Author's Note:  This is just a little “what if” that popped into my head. It is the companion piece to “A Familiar Song”.  Hope you like it!

Laura Holt was sitting at a table of the outdoor café, watching the people walk by, trying not to think about the fight she and her ‘employer’ had just had.  She just couldn’t understand why he was so angry with her.  Things had seemed to be going better for them lately.  She’d thought that this case in D.C., away from their familiar surroundings, might give them a chance to get to know each other even better.  Instead, once the case was over they had fought, and now here she was, sitting alone, wondering what to do.  Without meaning to, she started to listen in to a conversation at a table nearby.

“I’m just not sure it’s worth it anymore, Francine,” the brunette was saying unhappily.  “I try and I try, but he doesn’t see what I do at all.  He still thinks I’m just a housewife, a civilian.  And I’m not.  I’ve been with the Agency for well over two years now.  I take classes as often as I can.  I know I don’t have your experience, but I do know what I’m doing.”

She sighed in frustration.  “I just can’t seem to get him to understand that how he treats me hurts.  It’s like I’m not even there, like he doesn’t even have a partner.  Sometimes I feel like I do the work, and he takes the bows.  Which wouldn’t bother me so much, if he’d just say something nice to me about my work.  It wouldn’t have to be a big deal – I just want to know that he respects how hard I’ve worked to get where I am.”

Laura stopped listening as what the other woman had just said sank in.  She realized that she had been treating her own partner just as shabbily as this woman’s had treated her.  She had an apology to make.  Silently thanking the sad brunette, she paid her bill and went back to the hotel to wait for her partner.
