Amanda walked back into the family room after seeing the boys off on their night out with friends. She sat on the couch next to Lee.

"So," she asked. "What are we doing tonight?"

"Nothing."

"Nothing?"

"Nothing."

Amanda looked at her husband, wondering if he was up to something. "I thought you said we had plans for tonight?"

"I did," he said. "I thought we’d do nothing."

Amanda sat up on the edge of the cushion and turned to face Lee. "What are you talking about?"

"You know when you ask someone what they're doing and they say nothing? That's what I want to say tomorrow. We did 'nothing'."

"What?" she asked.

"Amanda," Lee said, taking her hands in his. "I've never done 'nothing' before. I've never been 'normal' before. Right now, I want to be *at home* with my wife, doing nothing."

"Ok, 'nothing' it is," Amanda said. She leaned back on the couch, keeping one of Lee's hands in hers.

They both sat in silence, neither saying anything, neither moving. After a few minutes, Lee began to fidget.

"So," Lee said and cleared his throat, "how do we do nothing?"

"Well, this is nothing, but if the boys and mother were here, we could do nothing with them."

"You can do nothing with the whole family?"

"Sure," Amanda said, nodding. "You just don't do anything that seems important at the time. When you look back on it, though, those moments of nothing can be the most important times in your life."

"So, we should make this a memorable night of absolutely nothing?"

"We can. Sometimes nothing is just that…nothing."

A few more moments of silence passed. Amanda wondered how much longer her husband could stand doing 'nothing.' She knew she had certain plans for tonight; they were going to be alone for the first time in two weeks. She also wondered how long it would be until he had the same plans. At the sound of Lee's voice, Amanda smiled.

"Amanda, can we do nothing right here on the couch, or should we do nothing in bed?"

"Well, considering the timing my family has, the bedroom would be a better choice."

Much later that night, Dotty West entered the family room to find her daughter and son-in-law on the couch. They were leaning over a Scrabble board that lay on the coffee table.

"So, what did you two do all night?" she asked.

Amanda and Lee looked at each and shrugged, smiling conspiratorially. Lee winked at Amanda and they replied, "Nothing."
